No nonsense advice, translation and paperwork services, removing the overwhelm so you can enjoy Lanzarote life worry free.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Relocating to Lanzarote

Can I retire to Lanzarote?

Absolutely! From anywhere in the world, Lanzarote has it´s doors open for you. If you are coming from the UK the rules have changed a bit but it’s still possible to enjoy your retirement here, with access to healthcare. Book a 30 or 60 minute (if you want to take your time!) consultation and we can explain the steps needed and make plans to arrange everything on your behalf.

How do I become a resident in Lanzarote?

The application process varies depending on your nationality and stage of life. We offer a residency consultation to answer all of your questions and make all the arrangements necessary to make the process as simple as possible.

Do I need to become a resident in Lanzarote?

If you plan on living on the island for more than 90 days you will need to apply for a residencia or visa, depending on your nationality. Yes, Europeans also need to register for residency if they’re going to be here more than 3 months. But don’t panic, we can make process simple for you

What do I need to know before moving to Lanzarote?

Don’t be scared, just be prepared. We advise everyone to arrive with 6 months worth of living expenses saved. If you plan to rent you will need to pay a months deposit as well as the first month’s rent. It may take time to find a permanent job and if you have kids you may want to send them to private school. Planning ahead helps you settle in with less stress when you arrive. Again, depending on  your nationality, if you plan to work here you’ll need a social security number and NIE, and you will need a residencia /TIE for every member of the family. We can help you take care of everything, including getting the kids into a school on the island. We recommend booking a 60 minute consultation so we can advise you depending on your unique circumstances and start making arrangements on your behalf.

What do I need to know about getting my kids into a Lanzarote school?

It’s wise to plan ahead as places may be limited. If you have very young children they may settle into a Spanish school, but generally older kids find it easier to transition into one of the private schools on the island. We can support you with registering them so you know you have their slot secured.

Am I entitled to healthcare in Lanzarote?

Absolutely. If you are paying social security contributions (as self employed or on a contract) you and your immediate family are provided for. If you are a pensioner with an S1 we can register you for healthcare, or if you have been resident here for a year we can help you set up monthly payments of 60 euros which will entitle you to medical care. Lot’s of options for you. And we won’t let the language barrier be an issue for you

Do I need a Will in Lanzarote?

Although it’s not compulsory, it does make the process of accepting inheritance run much more smoothly in the event of your passing. Our process is simple. We will send you a form to complete with all the information we need, and then send you a dual language draft so you can check the English version. Once you’re happy with it, we’ll book the appointment at the notary to go and sign the documents, and that’s it, simple!

Whats the average wage in Lanzarote?

The minimum salary is €1050 per month. Your employer will pay your social security and collect your income tax before paying your net salary. Having your social security paid entitles you, your spouse and children full health cover. After 2 years you will also be entitled to a generous unemployment benefit and a pension. This is the minimum wage, you may be able to earn a higher salary, but if you plan to do manual jobs such as cleaning and bar work, this is a good indication of what to expect. On the plus side, you do get plenty of holiday time –  there are 30 to 48 days paid holidays per year

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Working or setting up your own business in Lanzarote

How do I become self employed in Lanzarote?

Self employed may be the best option for you, depending on your line of work. You don’t need much, a European passport or a non EU passport with a work permit are some of the basics. In some cases, an NIE number and to register at the social security office. Nothing we can’t help you with.

What do I need to know to start a business in Lanzarote?

Good question, obviously the business plan is down to you. Having lived here for 40 years, I often sit and listen to the new entrepreneurs ideas and give them feedback based on my experience on the island. You will need to have contacts, knowledge and experience as well as a lot of passion for what you want to achieve.

How much tax will I pay in Lanzarote?

That varies a lot depending on your line of work, if you will have employees etc. But one of our collaborating accountants will be able to help better with that.

Do I need licenses to set up a business in Lanzarote?

Again, this depends entirely on your line of work, if you will have an establishment or not, etc. But let’s go on the basis that yes, you will need some form of license/ registration or both.

Can my family work in my business in Lanzarote?

Yes, as long as you register them correctly. Under 18´s are only allowed to work in certain lines of employment and your spouse would need to be registered as your employee or collaborator.

Do my staff need to be on a contract?

YES. I reply in upper case as this is sadly where a lot of new businesses to the island go wrong. Yes, all employees need to be on a contract, no matter how few hours they do. There are a lot of requirements (like in most countries) regarding employment but have no fear, we will put you in the right hands and guide you all the way.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How to remain legal as a resident in Lanzarote

Where do I need to update my address when I move in Lanzarote?

Get your pen and paper out. Changing your address (or your name also) is a horrid task.

You would need to register it at immigration, tráfico, social security, town hall, tax offices, your work and a lot list of others depending on your circumstances. We can help make the process a lot more straight forward and save you a whole lot of time. Book a quick consultation with us and we can prepare everything you need.

How do I pay my tax in Lanzarote?

In short, don’t wait for something to go wrong because you “didn’t know”. Ask an accountant, there are lot’s of good ones on the island, you’ll find two we collaborate with under our recommendations

If I am not a resident but own property in Lanzarote do I have to pay any taxes?

This is a common mistake. As a home owner in Spain you will be obliged to pay minimum 3 taxes each year. One is the yearly rates (council tax) for the property, the other is the yearly rubbish tax for the property and the last is your tax return as a NON resident. The minute you own property in a foreign country, i.e. Spain, you will always have to do a tax return to this effect.

How do update my drivers license in Lanzarote?

This depends on your nationality and the expiry of your current license. Many countries, European ones for start, have agreements with Spain to allow a “straightforward” swap, for other countries this isn’t an option and you would need to sit your drivers license from scratch again in Spain (theory and practical). Book a quick consultation if you would like further assistance.

Do I need a will if I own property in Lanzarote?

No, it’s not compulsory, but the truth is it makes life easier when the day comes and your family need to deal with all the paperwork side of things after you passing. We believe that making things easier for them in this crucial time is essential.

How do I buy a property if I do not live in Lanzarote?

Buying property abroad is such an exciting adventure that thousands of foreigners fulfil each year. No matter if the property is going to be your dream home or an investment, the requirements in a nutshell as a few: NIE number, Spanish bank account and to ensure you do your yearly tax returns each year. Pay your council rates and rubbish. Not much else. Obviously when buying property anywhere, you need to ensure you’ve done your homework, choosing the right location, budget, potential etc. for your needs. Check the property has no debts, no building irregularities and you will be onto a happy successful purchase. Need help with this? We offer a property conveyance service to take care of the checks on your behalf.
